Keeping your home free from mold is crucial to your health. Many people do not realize how harmful mold can be to the structure of your home and to the people living in the home. Mold in your kitchen, especially when it invades the drains in your sink, can be annoying. Prevention is important in keeping your home free from mold.
Mold Remediation and expert in mold removal and cleanup, advises that the best thing you can do for your drains to prevent mold is to pour a little bleach down them periodically. Keep your drains free from decaying food is very important. Do not allow food to sit in the garbage disposal. To clean your drain, once a month, you can pour a ½ cup of baking soda in your drain and add a cup of vinegar. Leave it in the drain for half an hour. Allow the bubbling action to clean the drain. Another good drain cleaner is lemons. Anytime you eat a lemon you can cut the rind in small pieces and put it down your garbage disposal. The rind will clean out the drain and the lemon juice will kill the mold. Crushing a cup of ice cubes in your garbage disposal will also clean your drain. Using a liquid drain cleaner can keep your drains fresh and clean as well.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, “The key to mold control is moisture control. It is important to dry water damaged areas and items within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth. If mold is a problem in your home, clean up the mold and get rid of the excess water or moisture. Fix leaky plumbing or other sources of water. Wash mold off hard surfaces with detergent and water, and dry completely. Absorbent materials (such as ceiling tiles & carpet) that become moldy may have to be replaced.” Kitchens and bathrooms are prone to mold growth. Keep your kitchen and bathroom dry and clean. Install a ceiling fan or exhaust fan to keep the air moving. Open your window often for fresh air. Keeping the humidity level in your home below 50% will greatly decrease mold growth. According to Kevin Bristol, “Condensation lines in Air Condition units also get mold in them.” You can pour a small drop of bleach in the lines every three months to clear them up.

Exposure to the spores that molds produce when left to grow in your home can cause health problems. Some people, especially infants and the elderly, can have severe problems if the exposure to mold continues. The first signs that you may have a reaction to mold can be sneezing, watery eyes, headache and feeling tired all of the time. If this persists, and mold is the culprit, you may develop asthma. According to a study done and reported in USA Today there has been a 300% increase in asthma due to mold exposure. Keep your home free from mold growth to prevent problems. If the mold persists and you can not clean it yourself, call a mold removal specialist to take care of it for you.
