Whichever method you choose, always dry the area completely by opening all windows, using a heater, fan, or dehumidifier. This is very important, or the mold will just grow back. Remember to check for colorfastness in an inconspicuous area 24 hours before doing a complete clean.

Pittsburgh hospital looks for mold source after 3 deaths!

A Pittsburgh hospital is working to find and eradicate the source of a rare mold that may have contributed to the deaths of three transplant patients and left a fourth person in “guarded condition,” a hospital spokeswoman said on Monday.

Concern over mold at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Presbyterian flared in early September when mold was discovered in the cardiothoracic intensive care unit, forcing the hospital to move 18 patients.

On Thursday, mold-borne illness was discovered in a liver transplant patient who died at UPMC Montefiore, a second campus of the hospital with no connection to the cardiothoracic unit, the hospital’s website said.

The two patients who previously died stayed in the same hospital room in the cardiothoracic unit of UPMC Presbyterian at different times. The patient in guarded condition was also in that unit.

“As a precaution, we are putting all transplant patients in UPMC Presbyterian-Montefiore on a new anti-fungal medication even though there is no sign of infection in any of these patients,” Dr. Steven Shapiro, the hospital’s chief medical and scientific officer, wrote in a blog post.

The hospital performs hundreds of transplants a year.

There are many different methods or techniques for mold remediation and removal depending upon the extent and type of problem you have.

When he was asked what to look for in a mold removal company he explained, “As far as mold remediation, you have to be careful of fly by night companies that are not certified or just recently received their certification, but have no experience. There are a lot of companies that are entering the business to make a quick dollar and really don’t know what they are doing.”

 

 

Bristol uses many different techniques to remove mold. Some have been around for awhile and others are new and unique. “The technique that we normally use is getting rid of the water source and removing the contaminated area. If it’s a cellulose material like drywall or insulation we would totally remove it. We go in, we take out the material, then [replace it with new mold resistant material]” explains Bristol. This process is done if the mold has grown into the drywall, carpeting, and ceiling or anywhere in the home.

If the mold is on the surface of cement or wood structure and you can’t remove it Bristol and most companies use the following technique to scrape from the surface. “Hyper-sanding, or high efficiency air particle sanding, is used on the contaminated studs after you have taken down the drywall. We sand them first and once they are sanded we come back and treat it with a biocide or other chemicals. These are biocides that basically kill off molds, bacteria, or other pathogens. Then we normally hyper-vacuum the surface and floor area to remove any spores that may have fallen to the ground. We wipe down all the walls with an antifungal solution to make sure that the mold spores that were released are now eliminated and of course we put in the negative air machine and air scrubbers. A negative air machine basically is a machine that filters out contaminated air and is exhausted outside through a flexed tube. Then we put in an air scrubber that actually takes the air and exchanges it several times per hour. From there we also do what they call biocide fogging. The fog actually eliminates the airborne mold spores so that once they’re eliminated in the air they fall to the ground and then we use a wet mop technique to finally get up all the mold spores and everything else. Of course, if its carpet that we are dealing with, we put down 6 mil poly on the floor to make sure that anything that falls while we are doing remediation falls on the actual polyethylene and we contain that area away from the rest of the home.” This technique can be modified to do yourself if the area of mold is small. Barricade the room off by plastic so the mold spores won’t float into other areas of the house. Clean the mold off by sanding or wiping. Spray with a mold or mildew cleaner. Clean all of the walls and flooring. Open the windows and doors to let fresh air in.

There is a new technique called dry ice blasting. According to Bristol, “Dry ice blasting is really revolutionizing the mold industry. We just go in and wire brush contaminated wood, then we use a dry ice blaster that actually uses ice pellets. When the ice pellets come out of the nozzle they turn into a CO2 gas.” The Co2 gas kills the mold and removes it from the surface immediately.

Whatever method you use make sure you protect yourself with face masks and gloves when cleaning it up. OSHA or the Occupational, Safety and Health Act says this about mold, “As a general rule, simply killing the mold, for example, with biocide is not enough. The mold must be removed.” Remember this in any remediation method you choose.

A respiratory mask and eye protection are necessary and adequate clothing to prevent skin contact is recommended.

As well an infested area of over 2ft is considered a “heavily infested” area and professional help should be consulted. Before you use bleach make sure to check your clothes for any “do not bleach” warnings. You might also want to do a spot test on your clothes after you’ve mixed the bleach and water solution just to make sure they won’t fade.

Another option, instead of mixing your own bleach and water solution, is to wash your clothes with a bleaching detergent such as Clorox or Oxiclean.

How to wash your clothes with bleach:

1. Start by putting your clothes into the washing machine and adding laundry detergent.
2. Once the washing machine has filled up with water add about a cup of bleach (or whatever amount the label on the bleach says to use).
3. Let your washing machine run like normal.
4. If you notice the colors fading at any stage remove your clothes and rinse them well.

Alternatively you can soak your clothes in bleach:

1. Use a concentration of about half a cup of bleach per gallon of water, or whatever ratio it says on the bleach’s label.
2. Let the clothes soak in the solution for a few hours, making sure the colors do not fade.
3. After soaking the clothes wash them in your washing machine with laundry detergent like you usually would.

 

How to Remove Mold from Clothes with Borax

Borax is a natural mold killer which does not emit toxic fumes. To kill mold on clothes with borax you can either purchase borax laundry detergent or add borax powder yourself to your washing. Mix the borax with hot water before adding it to your washing to make sure it is completely dissolved.

How to wash clothes using borax:

1. Add your clothes to the washing machine along with laundry detergent.
2. Dissolve half a cup of borax in very hot water.
3. Once the washing machine has filled up add the borax that you dissolved in hot water.
4. Let the washing machine run through like normal.

 

How to Remove Mold from Clothes with Vinegar

Vinegar kills 82% of mold species and can usually kill the mold growing on clothes. Vinegar will also remove the moldy smell from the clothes.

How to wash your clothes with vinegar:

1. To kill mold on your clothes using vinegar, put your clothes in the washing machine along with detergent and let the machine fill with water.
2. Then add about a cup or two of vinegar to your washing.
3. Let the washing machine run through its cycle as normal.

Alternatively, soak clothes in vinegar:

1. Let your clothes soak in a solution of one cup of white vinegar in a bucket of water for about an hour.
2. After soaking, wash the clothes with laundry detergent in your washing machine to wash away the mold and vinegar.
3. You might need to repeat the process to remove all the traces of mold and any moldy smell from your clothes.

 

How to Prevent Mold on Clothes

If you have mold growing on your clothes it’s probably because you left them in a damp pile for a few days or more. Every time you wash your clothes you should hang them on the line or dry them in the drier as soon as you can. Clothes that have been washed and then left wet for a day or more are at risk of mold starting to grow on them.

The same applies for clothes that have gotten sweaty or wet from you wearing them. Don’t throw wet clothes in the hamper where they’ll sit for days until you do the washing. Hang sweaty clothes somewhere where they can air out first. Do the same for wet swimming gear. Towels should also be hung up to dry after they’ve been used.
